Ubuntu
Velocity has numerous projects focused on giving back to the community and harnessing a spirit of “ubuntu”.

Ubuntu is a Nguni word which has no direct translation into English, but is used to describe a particular African worldview in which people can only find fulfilment through interacting with other people. Thus it represents a spirit of kinship across both race and creed which united mankind to a common purpose.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has said “Ubuntu is very difficult to render into a Western language… It is to say. ‘My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in what is yours‘…”

Mentoring Programmes
Velocity prides itself in the training and development of South Africans that do not have the same opportunities as most, by means of mentorship programs and by partnering with South Africa’s largest film school (AFDA) whereby four film graduates are selected each year to intern with the company in both production and creative fields. The AFDA School program is run each year over a three month period with selected students who are guided through the entire production process by industry professionals as they produce their own TV commercials for broadcast. Our ongoing philosophy is to identify passionate young people who do not have the same opportunities in life and through a workplace skills transfer process, develop them into quality film-makers who will either remain with the company or reach a point where they can successfully manage their own business and spread the training to others.

When I received an email from Africa Director for One Young World, Madam Catherine Peter, I thought I was dreaming while reading it again and again with my nervousness.

I would like to thank Velocity for recognising one of the rural boys, Khethelo Xulu, by committing themselves to take him to the globe. I am very much excited , words can not do justification of my feelings. however I am so grateful for what Velocity did to me, thank you very much to the whole team of Velocity film.

Cotlands
cotlands.co.za

Founded in 1936, Cotlands was originally created as a sanctuary for unwanted babies. It all started one night when a baby was left on the doorstep of Matron Dorothy Reece’s home in Mayfair, Johannesburg. She decided to take the infant in and care for it and so, Cotlands was born out of this single act of kindness.
